Does artificial intelligence make the world more inclusive?

On the ETH opinion platform ‘Perspectives’, Prof. Robert Riener writes that artificial intelligence (AI) can make the world more inclusive if people with disabilities are actively involved in shaping it. At the same time, AI must be based on diverse data, function transparently and make fair decisions.

According to Prof. Riener, if we succeed in this, AI can become a tool for emancipation that breaks down barriers and enables greater participation. However, if we leave its design uncritically to large technology companies, it threatens to reinforce existing inequalities.

AI is already making everyday life easier for people with disabilities. Examples include text generators for simple language, continuous monitoring of health data, and robotics and exoskeletons that enable greater mobility and self-determination.
