Until May 28, 2021, the European Space Agency ESA is looking for astronauts with disabilities. The program is called "Parastronaut".
The ESA wants to investigate under which circumstances a candidate with a physical disability can fly to the ISS space station. It is not yet clear, however, whether the chosen candidate will actually take part in a space mission in the end. Also, this first call is not (yet) addressed to people in a wheelchair, but to:
- People with one or two prosthetic feet/legs;
- People with legs of different lengths;
- People with a height below 130 cm.
Nevertheless, we think: An important first step towards inclusion also in space 😀.
