A TikTok video from Japan shows an escalator that automatically adapts to the needs of its users. The principle is as simple as it is ingenious:

• The escalator recognises the wheelchair.
• Three steps remain at the same level.
• The passenger travels upwards safely and effortlessly.

A wheelchair user who tried out the escalator described his experience with the words: ‘It's amazing not to feel like a burden.’
