How can shopping in a wheelchair be improved?

What changes need to be made in supermarkets to enable people in wheelchairs to shop more easily and independently? Five students will be tackling this question from 26 to 30 October 2026 as part of the InCube Challenge. They have been commissioned to do so by the Swiss Paraplegic Centre (SPZ).

The focus is on the following challenges:

  • Narrow aisles that make it difficult to manoeuvre a wheelchair
  • High shelves or lower shelves that protrude significantly, making it difficult to reach products
  • Cartons and other objects blocking the way
  • Difficulties in manoeuvring the wheelchair, steering the shopping trolley and filling it all at the same time

The students have a total of 120 hours to devise a solution and develop a prototype. The Migros branch in Zug is available to them for testing.

Anyone interested can watch the students at work in the glass cube at Rigiecke in Zug.

Further information is available on the InCube Challenge 2026 website.
