People in wheelchairs conduct city tours in Tokyo using robots

In Tokyo, small robots accompany tourists on a 90-minute tour of the Nihonbashi district. The white robots weigh four kilograms and are attached to a backpack at shoulder height. They are controlled remotely by people who work as guides from home due to illness or disability.

The pilots operate the robots via computer or tablet. Using a camera and microphone, they speak live to the group in English or Japanese and control gestures and movements. In doing so, they convey history and culture and share insider tips that are otherwise easily overlooked.

OryLab is behind the service. The company operates the Avatar Robot Café Dawn in Nihonbashi. There, employees with illnesses or disabilities communicate with and serve guests via robots from home.
